Costs payable in criminal law matters

Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) has increased all professional fees and disbursements by 10 per cent effective 1 October 2011.

In addition to the 10 per cent fee increase, from 1 October 2011 brief fees for summary crime contested hearings in the Magistrates’ Court and Children’s Court have increased from:

  • $470  to $700 for contests that proceed
  • $411 to $500 for contests that settle on the day of the contest.

The fee increase applies to all existing grants of legal assistance where the matter has not been finalised, and new grants made on or after that date.

All appearances and additional preparation completed prior to to 1 October 2011 attract the old fees – see Costs payable in criminal law matters in the VLA Handbook (September 2011).
