VLA may make a grant of legal assistance to a person in the following proceedings pursuant to the Serious Sex Offenders (Detention and Supervision) Act 2009:
- an application by the Director of Public Prosecutions for a detention order
- an application of the Secretary to the Department of Justice for an Supervision Order.
Documentary requirements
Applications under this guideline are only made by the standard grants assessment process.
A member of the either the section 29A practitioner panel or section 30 referral panel, or any other person seeking a grant of legal assistance, should forward the following documents for assessment:
- a completed VLA application form
- relevant proof of means
- a copy of the court application
- the lawyer’s assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the application (if the application is made by a lawyer)
- an indication of the appropriate level of detention or supervision that the person should receive and the reasons why.
