How the initial contribution is calculated based on assets
Table 3 shows how the initial contribution payable is calculated for:
- a person who has no relevant financially associated person (FAP) and the total value of the person’s assets is more than $865 (Column A)
- a person who has an FAP and the total value of their combined assets is more than $1730 (Column B).
See: What is included as assets.
Paying an initial contribution assessed on assets
A person who receives a grant of legal assistance must usually pay the initial contribution assessed on assets in a lump sum.
However, if the person can show to Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) that he or she would suffer undue hardship by having to pay in a lump sum, VLA may allow the person to pay by instalments or extend the time for the lump sum payment to be made.
