Income test

Income test
Who qualifies for a grant of legal assistance under the income test?
If the net disposable income of the person (and any financially associated person) is $255 or less a week:
- the person qualifies financially for a grant of legal assistance
and - Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) will not require the person to pay an initial contribution from their income towards their legal costs.
If the net disposable income of the person (and any financially associated person) is $256 or more a week:
- VLA may make a grant of legal assistance
and - any grant of legal assistance will be on condition that the person pay an initial contribution towards their legal costs.
The amount of the contribution will depend on the estimated legal costs of the service the person seeks. See Table 2 and Table 3.
